In addition to the books prescribed below, reading the news section everyday and preparing rigorously for the Current Affairs section of the test will hold the key to your chances of making it to the Mains. Generally, around 25-30% of the paper is based on current affairs (which might also draw from your knowledge you have garnered from reading all the NCERTs and standard textbooks).

Although, this booklist is given, students at times have asked where to begin. It is also essential to know which books are the most important ones to pay more attention to.
There are two traps you have to avoid while preparing:
1. Ancient India – Ancient India is very vast. Even if you spend 4 months preparing for it, there is still no guarantee that you will be able to answer questions from it. Read Nitin Singhania properly, twice or thrice before you head to the secondary and tertiary sources. Please study ancient India after you have perfected the other subjects.
2. Current Affairs โ Follow the Hindu irrespective of what others tell you. Read the editorials everyday even if you think you know everything that is written in the editorial for the day; thatโs how you consolidate your knowledge.
Choose another source, like our Website (or some other website or tuition current affairs) that consolidates the news from various subjects and stick to that source. Do NOT try following Current Affairs from too many sources. That will be the Achillesโ heel of your preparation.
The books are listed here according to their subjects and importance:
